The fishing port of Sitka is situated on the west side of Baranof Island in the Alaexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean in Alaska, USA.  It is flanked by snow-capped mountains on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west. Spread over an area of 12,461.8 sq km, Sitka is Alaska’s largest city.

Sitka has a damp moderate climate. The weather is cool for most of the year. The average annual temperature in summer is around 12°C, while in winter the temperatures may fall below freezing point.

Sitka was under the rule of the Russian Empire until 1867, after which Alaska was purchased by the USA. It was the site of the ceremony in which the Russian flag was lowered and the American flag was raised.

With a population of around 9,500, the local economy is centred on the timber, fishing and tourism industries.

Sitka, known to be one of Alaska’s oldest and most culturally significant towns, is also referred to as ‘Sitka-by-the-sea’.
