South Carolina has a total area of 82,965 sq km. The capital of the state is Columbia and its population about 4,012,000. The state of South Carolina is characterised by the Coastal Plain in the south, known as the Lowcountry. To the west of the Coastal Plains lie the Sand Hills. The upstate region is known as the Piedmont. Sassafras Mountain, at 1,085 m, is the highest point of the state. South Carolina experiences a humid subtropical climate. The state is known to susceptible to tropical cyclones. African Americans constitute majority of the population in South Carolina. Like most of the other Southern states, South Carolina is also predominantly Protestant Christian. Some of the major agricultural outputs of the state include tobacco, poultry, cattle, dairy products and tourism.
