While traveling by car be sure to fill up gas before leaving for your journey as certain town do not have gas stations especially if they are sparsely populated or some town which may be marked on the map may not even be existing such as Hagood, Atkins, Stateburg and Cartersville, which are marked on the map but do not exist.

The weather is quite unpredictable and one can expect tornados to snow blizzards in certain rare cases, which could make driving almost impossible and risky. The rains are accompanied by thunderstorms which occur in short but heavy durations.

While visiting the Santee National Wildlife Refuge beware of poisonous spiders which can make you seriously sick requiring hospitalization. It is best to avoid a spider if it is not bothering you instead of killing it or bring a spray to keep them away.

The standing water and vegetation tends to attract other insects as well so be aware of this and do not venture out in certain restricted areas in the park.
