Sumter is the county seat of Sumter County located in the midland region of South Carolina, USA. Located at the foothills of them Blue Ridge Mountains, it covers an area of 69.3 sq km and has a population of around 46,000.
Sumter has a temperate climate that remains warm throughout the year. Due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the humidity levels are high. The average temperature in summer is 27°C, while in winter it is around 18°C.
Officially incorporated as Sumterville in 1845, the city was named after General Thomas Sumter, the ‘Fighting Gamecock’ of the American Revolutionary War. Primarily an agricultural community, Sumter prospered after the establishment of the Shaw Air Force Base.
Sumter’s biggest attraction is the Swan Lake Iris Gardens. This fascinating landmark boasts of the different varieties of flowers and swans.
