The city of Belle Fourche is the seat of Butte County in South Dakota, USA. Located in the Black Hills, the city covers an area of 8.4 sq km and has a population of around 10,000.
Belle Fourche (French for ‘beautiful fork’) was named by French explorers for the confluence of Belle Fourche and Redwater rivers and Hay Creek. The city grew in population during the Gold Rush of 1876. The city’s economy depends on wool and cattle trade.
The city experiences very little or no wind. Summers are hot with an average temperature of around 28°C. Winters are very cold with an average temperature of 1°C.
Its location in the Black Hills region gives it an attractive landscape with abundant natural beauty. As a popular destination, the city has many parks, outstanding antique shops, hotels and museums. The Orman Dam and the Belle Fourche Country Club provide excellent outdoor recreation opportunities.
