Brookings is the seat of Brookings County in South Dakota, USA. Located on the Big Sioux River in the Black Hills region, the town covers an area of 31.1 sq km and has a population of around 25,000.
Incorporated in 1883, the town was named after Wilmot W Brookings, one of the first settlers in the Dakota Territory, who oversaw the establishment of the town.
Brookings has a humid temperate climate. Summers are hot with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 28°C. Winters are very cold and dry with temperatures varying from –3°C to –15°C.
Home to the South Dakota State University, the city is constantly buzzing with student activities. The downtown area is lined with historic buildings, quaint shops, restaurants and entertainment spots. The Brookings Summer Arts Festival with its arts and crafts exhibitions and the South Dakota Art Museum are huge draws.
