The city was named for the dead trees found in Deadwood Gulch. The city was formed after the discovery of gold in 1876 and was developed as a trading centre. Incorporated in 1876, the city has a population of around 5,000 with mining and lumbering as the major industries. The Broken Boot Mine allows visitors to pan for gold.
