Hill City is situated in Pennington County, South Dakota, USA. Located at the geographical centre of the Black Hill region, the city is spread over an area of 2 sq km and has a population of around 800.
The climate of Hill City is relatively dry. Its location in the Black Hills facilitates a pleasant weather with little or no wind. Summers are pleasantly warm with an average temperature of 20°C, while winters are cool with an average temperature of –1°C.
First settled by miners in 1876, Hill City is the oldest existing city in Pennington County. Tourism is a major industry with timbering and mining also contributing to the economy.
Known as the ‘Heart of the Hills’, Hill City is located along the banks of Spring Creek. The lush greenery of the Black Hill Region along with the tranquillity provided by the creek and two man-made lakes make the city a preferred vacation destination.
