Lead is situated in Lawrence County in South Dakota, USA. Located in the Black Hills region, the city covers an area of 5.2 sq km and has a population of around 8,000.

Lead was founded by miners and merchants during the Gold Rush of 1876. The Homestake Mine is a landmark of the city that stands witness to its mining past.

The climate of Lead is characterized by high winds and dramatic changes. Summers are hot with an average temperature of around 28°C. Winters are very cold with an average temperature of 1°C.

Due to its proximity to many parks and other attractions of the Black Hill region, Lead has become a popular family vacation destination. Horseback riding, rock climbing and fishing are some of the activities carried out in the gorgeous landscape of the city. In winter, the city is transformed into a ski resort destination.
