Tourist Guide Spearfish
Nestled in the northern Black Hills, Spearfish is situated in Lawrence County in South Dakota, USA. Located at the mouth of the Spearfish Canyon, it covers an area of 15.8 sq km and has a population of around 15,000. Known as ‘the Queen City’, it is surrounded by three mountain peaks which form a ‘crown’ around the city.
Spearfish was established during the Gold Rush of 1876. Incorporated in 1888, Spearfish derived its name from Native Americans and fur traders who would spear fish in the creek flowing through the canyon.
Spearfish is known for its rapid temperature changes. Summers are hot with an average temperature of around 28°C. Winters are very cold with an average temperature of 1°C.
The Black Hills National Forest provides many recreational opportunities for all ages. The Black Hills Passion Play performed annually attracts tourists and residents from other towns to this picturesque location.
