Beware of the riders during the annual motorcycle rally as there are several gang fights and violence which tend to flare up during these events. However, the police in the city are vigilant and keep track of such incidences.
There may however be certain other people who can take advantage of the situation and crowded rally areas to pose danger to those around so beware of your surroundings while visiting crowded areas.
Also beware of pickpockets and keep your valuables at home or in the hotel rooms before venturing out for attending such events. It would be better to take precautions beforehand and avoid visiting the place during the motorcycle rallies.
There is no danger while canoeing or kayaking on the lakes and rivers in Sturgis however beware of barbed wire fences laid across rivers to confine livestock.
