Tourist Guide Yankton

Yankton is the seat of Yankton County in South Dakota, USA. Located on the Missouri River near its confluence with the James River, the city is spread over an area of 20.7 sq km and has a population of around 20,000.

Known as ‘the village at the end of the line’, Yankton was originally the winter camping ground for a group of Sioux Indians. Settled in 1859, Yankton was the Dakota Territorial Capital until 1883.

Yankton has a continental climate. Summers are extremely hot with temperatures reaching as high as 42°C, while winters are very cold with temperatures dropping to –15°C.

Yankton is known as ‘River City’ due to its location and the important role played by the rivers in its growth. The area around the river consists of rolling hills. The city is located in the fertile part of the Missouri River where agriculture and ranching are the major occupations of the inhabitants.
