Known as the ‘Ancient City’, the city of St Augustine is situated in St John’s County in Florida, USA. Located on a stretch of coastline between the Matanzas and the San Sabastian Rivers, the city covers an area of 27.8 sq km.
First established by the Spanish in 1565, it is the oldest permanent European settlement in the United States. The city prospered into a tourist attraction in the late 1800s under the supervision of oil magnate, Henry Flagler.
The city has a very pleasant tropical climate due to the moderating effect of the Gulf Stream. The average winter temperature is around 18°C while the humid summer temperature is around 26°C.
The city has a population of around 12,000. Although tourism is the largest contributor to the economy, St Augustine is a commercial fishing centre and a port of entry for ships.
