Located at the meeting point of the Talkeetna, Chulitna and Susitna Rivers in Alaska, USA, the colourful town of Talkeetna covers an area of 111.2 sq km and has a population of around 900.
The city derives its name from the Indian word meaning ‘from where the river joins’. Established as a mining town and trading post in 1896, it was originally the site of a Tanaina Indian village. The town grew after the gold rush brought many prospectors to the area. Today, tourism is a major contributor to the economy.
It enjoys warm summers with an average summer temperature of 18°C. Winters are very cold with an average temperature of –10°C and heavy snowfall.
Its proximity to Mount McKinley and the annual Moose Dropping Festival attracts many visitors. It is also the staging point for climbers who want to ascent Mount McKinley.
