The city has a population of 13,200 with the population density of 976.3 per square miles. Athens is surrounded by the Unicoi Mountains which are 20 miles west of the city.

Athens is situated on the banks of the Tennessee River, which is 20 miles away from the centre of the city.

The Starr Mountain is connected to Athens and is just 15 miles from Athens. Athens is connected with the mouth of the Hiawassee River.
