During the period leading up to the US Bicentennial in 1976, an urban renewal project was begun in the City of Maryville called as the Bicentennial Park. The aim was to transform a region that had heavy pollution and light industrial activity to a green region that had an exercise course, picnic tables and walkways. On 4th July 1976, this park was dedicated. Local funds were used for its construction.
