St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Memphis, Tennessee is known for its beautiful design and hospitable, welcoming nature. Located at 155 Market Street, St. Mary’s is a Catholic church with German roots, founded in 1860 by German immigrants who settled in the Memphis area. It has since provided a welcoming community for Catholics and all who wish to visit. St. Mary’s is active in community service efforts like soup kitchens. It also opened Tennessee’s first parochial high school in 1887, leading the way for Catholic education throughout the state.
The interior of St. Mary’s is mesmerizingly beautiful and almost as welcoming as the people who operate the parish. The altars are hand-crafted of wood shipped from Germany. The pews, intricate confessional and Stations of the Cross were mostly constructed by Franciscan brothers. Over the years, the German roots of the church have dissolved into a diverse parish of all types of people from the Greater Memphis area, as well as Mississippi and Arkansas. The more than 150-year-old church feels as young as ever. To experience the vibrant Catholic youth, call (901) 522-9420.
