Reviews Chucalissa Indian Village
Chucalissa Indian Village
Archaeological remains dating back to the 1400s seem almost impossible to fathom, but the Chucalissa Indian Village in Memphis, Tennessee is just that. The remains are located at 1987 Indian Village Drive on a bluff that overlooks the Mississippi River. Managed by the University of Memphis, Chucalissa is dedicated to understanding the science of archaeology and provides a gateway for the interpretation of Native American history. This Walls Phase mound and plaza complex was occupied, abandoned and reoccupied several times between 1000 and 1550.
Some of the notable remains excavated her include well-preserved architectural, floral, faunal and human bone remains. This area is believed to have been a part of Hernando de Soto’s expedition in the 1540s as well. The corresponding museum boasts a broad collective of artifacts recovered from the area. A hands-on archaeology lab allows visitors to personally handle various artifacts from the sites, such as stone tools. Together, the museum and the active archaeological site allow for the better understanding of Native American history and how it shaped the United States. For information, call (901) 785-3160.
