The site of Martin Luther’s King Jr.’s assassination at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis used to represent a feeling of overwhelming loss and tragedy. Now the home to the National Civil Rights Museum, it exudes a sense of hope and enlightenment that King sought ardently to spread through his movement. Located at South Main and Huling Streets in Memphis, Tennessee, the museum maintains a dedication to educating the public on the history of the American Civil Rights Movement and its subsequent influence on human rights efforts across the world. In a city that’s a part of the South, a region that was historically ridden with racial injustice, visiting a museum as enlightening as the National Civil Rights Museum is both shocking and powerful. Its many collections, exhibitions and educational programs chronicle the civil rights movement as far back as 1619. One of the most poignant exhibits is the hotel room Dr. King stayed in on that fateful day in April 1968. It remains untouched, giving visitors an eerie feel of retracing the final steps of such a monumental leader in the civil rights movement. The detailed displays provide heartbreaking revelations about the human struggle that resulted during the civil rights era. This history is so much a part of what defines the identity of today’s America, so a visit to this museum will both move and educate you. For information, call (901) 521-9699.
