Centuries of history and respect linger within the gates of Elmwood Cemetery, the oldest active cemetery grounds in Memphis, Tennessee. Located at 824 South Dudley Street, Elmwood Cemetery dates back to 1852 and has since been used as burial grounds for more than 75,000 people, including mayors, governors, senators, singers, generals, millionaires, martyrs and perfectly normal citizens of Memphis. What began as the product of fifty gentlemen from Memphis quickly began to expand after the Civil War casualties and thereafter.
The cemetery was established as a classic garden cemetery, with a park-like environment detailed with Victorian structures, magnificent monuments, towering trees and gorgeous gardens, all of which lighten the atmosphere within the cemetery walls. Gothic statues and figurines of angels enhance the cemetery’s classic beauty and provide a visual insight into the cemetery’s historical wealth. Visitors can even take tours of the grounds to learn about Elmwood’s rich history. The impressive 80-acre grounds are a remarkable piece of land to lay loved ones to rest or take a reflective walk in the company of those passed. For information, call 901-774-3212.
