Mud Island River Park

Mud Island River Park isn’t exactly an island, but it’s definitely a historical and environmental oasis in Memphis, Tennessee.  Located at 125 North Front Street, Mud Island River Park is a small peninsula that is home to a museum, monorail track, restaurant and amphitheater.  One of the most unique attractions about the park is the Riverwalk, a scale replica of the lower Mississippi River as it flows from Cairo, Illinois south to the Gulf of Mexico.

The scale model flows hydraulically from north to south throughout the park as markers explain historical facts about the river. Along the model walkway are twenty mapped cities, markers of tributaries where other rivers meet the Mississippi and a one-acre Gulf of Mexico that the river empties into. Here, visitors can ride along in a pedal boat or raft or take a quick dip to cool off.  Also at the park is Mississippi River Museum, which lays out the history of the lower Mississippi River valley through various exhibits and educational programs. In addition, the amphitheater in the park is used for various performances and summer concert series.

The monorail that carries visitors over to Mud Island River Park provides an incredible aerial view of downtown Memphis and the Mississippi River. All these remarkable educational and recreational activities take place with the beautiful downtown Memphis skyline in the background, making the Mud Island River Park one of Memphis’s hidden gems.
