Long Center is a significant achievement for Austin. In 1998, the citizens voted to approve the lease of Lester E Palmer auditorium to a nonprofit group Arts Center of the city. In 1999, the center hired Chicago renowned architect, Skidmore, of Owings and Merrill to do the center renovation. By 2001, the center had raised more than 40 million dollars of its fundraising goal.
