Brownsville city is the county seat of Cameron County and is considered as the 15th largest city in Texas. This city is the southernmost city in Texas. This city was originally established in 1848 by Charles Stillman and it was made the county seat of the new Cameron County in 1849 and was incorporated in 1850.
The population was 139,722 as per the 2000 census. As of 2009, the population of the city is 172,806, and since 2000, it has had a population growth of 23.41 percent.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 215.0 square kilometers, which makes it the largest American city in lower Rio Grande Valley.208.2 square kilometer is land and 6.8 square kilometer is water.
The Brownsville area is full of well established art galleries and many museums which represent art and travelling exhibits from all parts of the world.
