Valley International Airport is situated in northeast Harlingen in Texas. The airport has three runways and is also known as Rio Grande Valley International Airport. Also, this airport serves Harlingen and South Padre Island. With seven gates, only three are operational year round and an additional gate being operated by Sun Country Airlines seasonally. Opened in 1943 as Harlingen Army Airfield, during World War II, it was used by the US Army Air Forces as a training base.
