The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum lies in Houston in Texas and is part of the Menil Collection. It is spread over four-thousand square-feet and was designed by François de Menil.
The interior has innovative architecture which is a combination of opaque glass, rough stone and rich wood, creating an atmosphere which is reminiscent of an art house and spiritual space as well.
While there are no windows on the building surface, it has a skylight of 1,012 sq ft which allows natural light to illuminate the interiors.
It boasts of displaying unbroken Byzantine frescoes which are exclusive in the whole of the western hemisphere. A Church in Lysi was the place from where the artefacts were taken, in 1980s.
The majority of the collection is in the form of apse and dome frescoes.
The Virgin Mary is depicted in the apse while the Dome of Lysi displays Christ Pantokrator, the ‘all sovereign’.
