The county seat of Hays County, San Marcos is a city in Texas, United States. The city with a population of 50,371 people in 2008 was founded on the banks of the San Marcos River in 1851 and incorporated in 1877. It is spread over 18.2 square miles of land area and located at the gateway of the Texas Hill Country.
The San Marcos riverside was home to the Clovis culture and has been site to human habitation since the last 10000 years. The economy of San Marcos relied on the cotton and the cattle in 1881. With the emergence of the town as the manufacturing and light industrial sector and later the spurt in the tourism sector allowed the town to prosper.
The culture of the city is enriched by the growing Hispanic population as well as a small African American population. The cultural events of the city like the Cinco de May celebrations and Juneteenth celebrate and highlight different cultures in the city.
