Salt Lake City is home to the Timpanogos Cave, which is a national monument in the Wasatch Mountains and offers a spectacular view of the American Fork Canyon. For another striking peek at the city, you can go to the Red Butte Gardens in the foothills, which has fountains, waterfalls and a colourful display of flora. You can also take a train ride on the Historic Heber Valley railroad through Provo Canyon.
Another national place of interest is Trolley Square, with its bustling marketplace and the old Mormon Temple. For a laugh, head to the Off Broadway Theatre downtown which has hilarious Broadway spoofs and comedy shows.
Descend the mountain and visit the Cathedral of the Madeleine, which is the largest Catholic Church in Salt Lake. Those with an interest in culture and history can visit the Utah museum of Fine Arts, or the Salt Lake Art Centre. The Utah State Capitol building is a beautiful structure not to be missed.
Salt Lake City, set in picturesque surroundings, offers an array of recreational options. It is known for its outdoor sports and hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics. The nearby mountains provide for activities such as biking, hiking and camping.
The Great Salt Lake provides a unique swimming experience due to its high salinity. Boating and sailing can also be undertaken on one of the lakes here. The rivers in the area offer white water rafting and canoeing. Alta, Snowbird and Solitude are fantastic ski resorts that provide facilities for numerous winter sports.
Other historic sights include the Beehive House and Fort Douglas.
