The city of Rutland is situated in Rutland County in Vermont, USA. The city is surrounded by the town of Rutland, which is a separate municipality. Nestled in the Green Mountains, the city covers an area of 19.87 sq km and has a population of around 22,000.
The city began as a settlement known as Mill Village on Otter Creek. The city grew after the construction of the Rutland Railroad linking it to Boston in 1879. The marble industry grew after the discovery of marble deposits in the city, earning it the nickname of ‘Marble City’.
Rutland has a moderate climate with warm summers and mild winters. In summer, the average temperature is 22°C, while the average winter temperature is –5°C.
Its location between the Green and Taconic Mountain ranges gives it a beautiful landscape that is conducive to outdoor recreational activities. Skiing and hiking in the valley and swimming in the lakes are popular among the locals and visitors.
