The independent city of Alexandria is situated in Virginia, USA. Located along the western bank of the Potomac River, the city covers an area of 39.9 sq km and has a population of around 150,000.
Founded in 1718, the city is known for its abundance of Victorian architecture and historic attractions. Visitors can relive the nineteenth century while walking through the colonial-era architecture and cobblestone streets in Old Town, the city’s downtown area.
Summers are warm with temperatures ranging from 30°C to 21°C. Winters are cold with temperatures varying between 6°C and –2°C. Ice storms occasionally hit the city in January and February.
Known as ‘The Fun Side of the Potomac’, the city is constantly buzzing with cultural activities. Alexandria has about 123 art galleries and several theatres. The Blue Ridge Mountains offer stunning scenic beauty as well as outdoor recreational activities.
