Amtrak is the national passenger rail service which provides services to this city with 2 routes, one is the Cardinal and another is the Crescent. Cardinal operates thrice a week and Crescent operates daily in both the directions. Once a major rail hub, Charlottesville is served by both the Southern Railway and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. There are proposals for extending the Virginia Railway express, which is the commuter rail line that connects North Virginia to Charlottesville.
