The city, Fairfax, gets its name from Thomas Fairfax, who was the sixth Lord Fairfax of Cameron. Fairfax is an independent city and forms an enclave within the confines of Fairfax County in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The city is the county seat, although it is politically independent of the surrounding county. Fairfax is situated in the Northern Virginia region. The population was 21,498 as per the 2000 census.
