The Poplar Forest used to be a retreat for Thomas Jefferson, the third American President. Another historical monument is the Sandusky House, which is one of the city’s last-standing reminders of the Civil War.

Admire the Greek-revival design of Lynchburg’s most famous landmark, the 1855-built Old Court House, which was built as a Greek temple and now houses the Lynchburg Museum with its wide collection of artefacts and cultural exhibits known throughout Virginia.

Another popular tourist attraction is the Natural Bridge, which is considered as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The bridge is carved out of a gorge from the mountainous terrain and creates an arch nearly 70 m high.

The 22,000 acre Smith Mountain Lake is one of America’s largest manmade water bodies, offering guests excellent waters for swimming and boat rides. Hike up the Appalachian Trail or the Crabtree Falls which offers an amazing view and a drop of almost 450 m.
