The independent city of Newport News is situated in Hampton Roads in Virginia, USA. Located on the northern shore of the James River, the city covers an area of 308.3 sq km and has a population of around 190,000.
Formerly an agricultural and fishing village, Newport News developed after the arrival of the railroad and the establishment of a shipyard.
Newport News enjoys a temperate climate moderated by its proximity to the Gulf Stream. Summers are warm with temperatures ranging from 31°C to 22°C, while winters are cold with temperature ranging from 8°C to 1°C.
Blessed with a long coastline, the city’s marine history is on display at the Mariners’ Museum.
The Virginia Living Museum displays marine life and provides access to the Deer Park Lake, which has animals in their natural habitats. The Peninsula Fine Arts Center features cultural performances such as the Virginia Symphony and the Virginia Opera.
