The independent city of Petersburg is situated in the state of Virginia, USA. Located on the Appomattox River, the city covers an area of 60.1 sq km and has a population of around 35,000.
Originally known as Peter’s Point, the city became an important railroad centre. Today, tourism and manufacturing industries form the backbone of the economy. Known for the Battle of the Crater, the city has a played an important role in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The historical battlefields are popular tourist attractions.
Summers are warm with temperatures ranging from 32°C to 19°C, while winters are cold with temperatures ranging from 10°C to –1°C.
The city’s rich history comes alive in its museums which display the architecture, art and artefacts of Petersburg. The Siege of Petersburg is the most notable event of the city. The Siege Museum in Old Towne Petersburg displays a remarkable interpretation of this period.
