The independent city of Roanoke is situated in Virginia, USA. Located on the Roanoke River, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the city covers an area of 111.1 sq km and has population of around 95,000.
Established in 1852, the city earned the nickname ‘Big Lick’ as a result of the salt deposits in the area.
The city has a temperate climate. Summers are warm with temperatures ranging from 30°C to 17°C. Winters are cold with temperatures varying between 7°C and –2°C. As the water from the surrounding areas drain into the narrow Roanoke Valley, floods are common in the city.
Historically known as the ‘Capital of the Blue Ridge’, the city, especially its vibrant downtown area, attracts visitors with its wide array of arts, history and culture. The tree-lined neighbourhoods perfectly compliment the stunning mountain views. The Mill Mountain boasts of a huge neon star that can be seen from a distance of over 95 km.
