The streets of downtown Staunton may appear maze-like to outsiders with its numerous narrow one-way-only directions.
One should always carry a map and if possible a GPS system so as not to get lost. Although the crime statistics of the city is just below average, one can never be too careless; especially if you are traveling with your family.
Thefts and burglaries are not uncommon here. Visitors should always lock their motel rooms and car doors. In unfamiliar places, it helps to be keen and aware. Avoid being in lonely places at late hours.
Do not indulge in detailed conversation with strangers and give them the impression of being a naïve tourist. Travel with groups and always carry the contact numbers of nearby cop stations. It is advisable not to carry much cash with you.
