Spokane, called Lilac City, is the seat of Spokane County and the second largest city in Washington, USA. It lies on the banks of the Spokane River (a tributary of the Columbia River) and is around 450 km east of Seattle. The Washington–Idaho border is at a distance of about 30 km.
The city and the rest of Eastern Washington are served by the busy Spokane International Airport.
Spokane has a semi-arid, continental climate with warm summers having temperatures of 15°C to 21°C and cold winters which see the mercury level fall below –1°C. The hottest month is August and the coldest is January.
Spokane has a population of nearly 200,000 people. It is the third largest city in the Pacific Northwest region, preceded by Seattle and Portland. Mining is the city’s main industry, followed by agriculture and lumbering among others.
