West Virginia has a total area of 62,809 sq km. With an approximate population of 1,808,400, its capital is Charleston. Situated in the United States of America, West Virginia shares its boundary with Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland and Virginia. The Ohio River and Potomac River also form part of the boundary of the state. The south-western part of the state experiences a humid subtropical climate, while the higher elevations of the west have a humid continental climate. Initially inhabited by the Native Americans, who used these hills as a hunting ground, the Confederate and Union armies used these very hills as the battleground during the Civil War. Later the immigrant workers arrived, who came to work in the oil and gas, timber, coal and glass industries. All this has contributed in shaping the culture of the state.
