Parkersburg is situated in the north western part of the state of West Virginia in the USA. This town with a population of approximately 33,000 inhabitants is the chief administrative centre of Wood County.
Parkersburg experiences a warm summer with the maximum average temperatures at 30°C. January is the coldest month with temperatures falling to as low as –6.7°C. Maximum rainfall is in the months of July and August.
When the town was originally laid out in the 1700s, it was known as Newport; it was then renamed Parkersburg in honour of the war hero to whom the land had been granted. Two important routes passed though the town; it was thus a crucial transport hub as well as a medical centre during the American Civil War.
Since Parkersburg lies at the confluence of two important rivers it benefited tremendously in the days of the gas and oil boom as it served as a shipping depot.
