La Crosse is located at the western border of the state of Wisconsin in the USA. This town with a population of approximately 51,800 inhabitants is the administrative centre for the La Crosse County and home to several educational institutions.
The town is located in a valley along the Mississippi River and is flanked on the other side by towering cliffs.
La Crosse experiences a temperate continental climate. Summers are pleasant with the maximum temperature averaging at 29°C. Winters are long and severe; the temperatures oscillate between a maximum of –4°C and a minimum of –14°C.
It is believed that fur traders from France stopped in this region while travelling on the Mississippi river more than 300 years ago. But it was only in the middle of the nineteenth century that a trading post was built here. Sawmills and the brewing industry led to its further development.
