Wisconsin State Capitol rises between the picturesque waters of Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. It is a majestic granite structure and glows similar to a beacon, accenting the Madison skyline. In 1836, the first Wisconsin Legislature assembled in a rented building situated in old Belmont. With struggle, a permanent location was scheduled for the state government. Eventually, Madison was chosen to be the site. This Capitol was built in this year and was replaced by a larger building in 1863.
