This is a freshwater lake which is surrounded on all 3 sides by the city of Madison. Monona is a Chippewa word which means ‘beautiful’. This lake has a surface area of 3,274 acres, maximum depth of 64 feet and surface elevation of 845 feet. The lake is frozen for about 107 days in a year. The lake is popular for fishing and houses several species of fish such as muskellunge, walleye, bluegill, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, lake sturgeon and northern pike.
