Wausau is located in the central part of the state of Wisconsin in the USA. This city with a population of approximately 38,000 inhabitants is located at an altitude of over 1,000 metres above sea level.
Wisconsin River runs through the centre of the city, and the surrounding region is covered with dense forests. Red granite mines are found in abundance in the region.
Wausau experiences a partly temperate and a partly subarctic climate. The average temperature in winter is –6°C, but at times, it can fall much lower than this. July is the warmest month with the average temperature being 29°C.
The river flowing through this region attracted settlers, and the area was initially inhabited by French explorers. Soon lumbermen from nearby areas came to Wausau to explore its rich timber sources, and eventually, many sawmills sprouted in the area. Today, Wausau is a flourishing industrial and tourist centre.
