Little Rock Central High School was the site of the Little Rock Integration Crisis of the 1950s. Nine black students had been refused admission to the school in 1957. The students protested against such discrimination and asked for integration. They had to face mob fury and an army had to be called in to restore peace and escort the black students into the school campus.
The Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site Visitor Centre is the primary attraction at the site housing permanent exhibits from the 1957 crisis. This school was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 19 August 1977. Some of the nearby attractions are the Arkansas Post National Memorial, Buffalo National River and Fort Smith National Historic Site. |
