Fort Smith National Historic Site was established on 13 September 1961 to preserve the remains of two US military forts that were built in the nineteenth century. The site is also known for being an important stop along the ‘Trail of Tears’.
Located in a former jail building, the visitor centre is a must-visit spot at the historic site. The centre also houses exhibits from the Trail of Tears and the Federal Court. Other important attractions at the site are the barracks, two jails and the courtroom of Judge Parker. Belle Point is a site of picturesque scenic beauty with the confluence of Rivers Arkansas and Poteau falling in the vicinity. Some of the nearby attractions are the Fort Smith Museum of History, Fort Smith Art Centre and Bonneville House. |
