The Muir Woods National Monument was set up on 9 January 1908 to protect the forests of the coast redwood trees. This protected area is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The coast redwood trees are the greatest attraction of the monument with most of them between the ages of 500 to 800 years and the oldest one being 1,100 years old. The visitor centre has a collection of exhibits that are useful to all tourists.
As many as 50 species of birds and 11 species of bats can be found at the monument. Outdoor activities include hiking, biking and camping. The Muir Beach has a picturesque beauty with the hills meeting the sea. It is also a good picnic spot. The Olema Valley with its lush green grasslands and forests is a great place for a vacation. |
