Set up on 20 August 1969, this region is spread over an area of 6,000 acres and has the largest collection of petrified redwood trees and fossils of plants and animals in the world. Its landscape resulted from volcanic activities dating back to some 35 million years ago.
The Visitor Centre is an interesting place to visit. It has displays and exhibits of fossils and also houses a bookstore. Fossils of almost 100 species of plants have been discovered and preserved in the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Fossils of more than 1,100 species of insects have also been identified here. Some of the petrified Sequoia trees found here are largest of their kinds in the world. The landscape of this national monument is a haven for any nature lover. |
