This site was declared a national historic site recently on 7 November 2000. It commemorates the cruel massacre of as many as 200 Cheyenne people, mainly women, children and the elderly on 29 November 1864. The massacre was carried on by a party of the American Soldiers led by Colonel John M. Chivington.
There are a few trails available for hiking at the site. The summers in this area experience extremes of temperatures and at times all activities at the park are suspended due to bad weather conditions.
The John Martin Reservoir, Kiowa County Museum and Big Timbers Museum are some of the nearby attractions that are worth visiting. The Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site is opened for tourist for a limited time period only.
