Adelaide: Vacations and Tourism

Adelaide, named after the wife of King William IV, is the capital city of South Australia. Nestled between the Adelaide Hills on the Southern Australian coast, it is divided into Adelaide and North Adelaide by the Torrens river.

It has a Mediterranean climate with scorching summers (December to February) and mild, soggy winters. Spring and autumn are the best time to enjoy the variety of landscapes—mountain ranges, parklands and sultry beaches.

Home to 1.4 million inhabitants, it is the most teeming and multicultural of the Australian cities. On Adelaide’s city streets, it is not unusual to hear people speak Italian, Greek, Lebanese, Vietnamese or Arabic.

Thanks to Colonel William Light who laid out Adelaide’s street plan, the city is one of the rare metropolises that exude a ‘city in a park’ feel.
