Yuranighs Aboriginal Grave Historic Site commemorates a unique combination of aboriginal and European burial customs.
Yuranigh, member of the Wiradjuri tribe, accompanied a surveyor, Thomas Mitchell on an expedition in 1846. When Yuranigh passed away, he was buried as per traditional customs, encircled with carved trees. Later, out of respect, Mitchell placed a headstone over the grave. This combination of aboriginal and European burial customs is unique to Australia.
The grave site honours an important person in local aboriginal history. A self-guided tour around the area is the best way to explore the surrounding highlands. With permission from the park office, the local aboriginal community can be contacted.
